Pea Pick’n Time

June 13th, 2007

Nancy came over this afternoon, and she noticed that the Purple Hull peas and the Baby Limas were ready to pick, so she picked them. After she finished picking, she, Mom and I shelled them all. When all was said and done, we got about 2 pound of Purple Hull peas and 2.5- 3 pounds of Lima beans.

There will be a lot more of the Limas to pick soon. The regular Black Eyed peas will probably be ready in a week or two and the second crop of Purple Hulls in another month.

Blooming Time

June 8th, 2007

A lot of plants are in bloom right now-eggplants, cantaloupe, regular black-eyed peas, and the second round of Blue Lake green beans.

The okra is still growing, but there are no signs of blooms yet.

The yellow squash and cucumbers seem to have finished producing.

The cherry tomatoes are still going strong, but the slicing tomatoes are not doing as well. I think I am missing something in the soil.

Lots of Rain

May 30th, 2007

We had a good, steady rain today for about eight hours. It has done wonders for the look of the garden. The plants alway seem to do better after a rain than when just watered with a hose from the house.

Nothing was picked today.

Progress

May 24th, 2007

The okra plants are growing nicly. They have a lot of new growth on them and they appear to be healthy.

Tuesday picked another pound of beans for a total so far of 2.25 pounds. More to be picked today.

Some of the pods on the lima beans are getting long. They haven’t started filling out, yet, though. The limas also have a lot of blloms–over a dozen on each plant.

Sunday Supper

May 22nd, 2007

Sunday morning, I picked the first Blue Lake beans. The total was 1 1/4 pounds.

That night, Nancy came over and she, Mom, and I had the Blue Lakes, squash from the garden, and a few cherry tomatoes, and a pork chop on the side. Everything was great. The beans were the tenderest I think I have ever had, and the squash was better than it had been earlier in the spring.

Human Visitors

May 20th, 2007

This weekend, my friend Vince and his family came down from Atlanta. Vince, Shari, Jessica, and Albert came over Friday night, and we all had a great time visiting.

Saturday afternoon, Vince, Jessica, and Albert came by to look at the garden. Vince says he just has a small kitchen garden this year.

Maybe we can get him to write something about it on the blog.

Lots of Rain

May 16th, 2007

It rained for several hours today, and we needed it very much. Everything looks much better.

Lima Beans

May 15th, 2007

The Lima Beans are starting to make pods. I wonder how many beans will be in each pod.

First Tomatoes Picked

May 13th, 2007

Tonight, Nancy picked a lot of squash and the first cherry tomatoes–just a few. The Blue Lake beans won’t be far behind.
